Hair Loss

What is it?

Alopecia is the medical name referring to hair loss or lack of hair on the body where hair is usually found.

Hair growth occurs in a cycle with different phases namely the growth (anagen) phase, transition (catagen) phase, resting (telogen) phase and finally the shedding (exogen) phase.

85-90% of hair follicles reside in the growing phase and remains there for approximately 2-6 years.

Only about 10-15% of hair are in the resting phase. It is in this resting phase where hair growth stops, and hair prepares to eventually shed.

Androgenic alopecia (AA)

Male & female pattern baldness.

This type of hair loss is driven by the excess production of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT bind to receptors on the hair follicle and causes follicle miniaturization and hair. This type of hair loss has a hereditary component.

Telogen effluvium

This type of hair loss occurs due to a stressful event (physical or emotional) and causes a large number of hair follicles to enter the resting (telogen) phase but does not re-enter the next growth phase. Stressful events include drastic weight loss, major surgeries, medical conditions and vitamin deficiencies, certain medications, childbirth and emotional stress.

Anagen effluvium

Sudden loss of hair in the growth phase usually due to chemotherapy, radiation and certain medications.

Alopecia areata

This is due to an auto immune disorder and present with patchy hair loss.
